What is A Time Clock System?

A time clock is an instrument that helps businesses keep track of their employees' working hours by recording their work's start and end times. A time clock is known by many other names in the market like a punch clock, a clock card machine, a time recorder etc.

The Evolution of The Time Clock System:

Earlier, these were known as Buddy clocks, after the name of their inventor Williard and Harlow Buddy. Williard Bundy invented the time clock in 1988 as he suggested a system that involved individual worker cards that could record the time of each worker separately. His brother Harlow Bundy perfected this system and started mass-producing the first edition of time clocks.

Since then, time clocks have undergone a lot of change. Listed below are a few types of time clock systems that are used in the current job market:

  1. Basic Time Clock:

A basic time clock system works by merely stamping the date and time of an employee's start and finish hours on a timecard. Such timecards are usually activated by pressing a simple button or stamping in the card.

  1. Self-Calculating Time Clocks:

Although self-calculating time clock systems are like basic time clocks, they add the total time recorded after each period on their own, thus reducing the need for manual interference or using Human Resource's, thereby ensuring faster calculations and reduces the probability of error.

  1. Mobile Tracking Time Clocks:

Some time clock systems use mobile phones to track the working hours of their employees. By simply installing specific applications on employees' devices, the employer can get alerts when they begin and end work. Coupling the time clock with GPS technology helps in tracking worker's location or get additional validation.

  1. Biometric:

Using an individual's biometrics is the most advanced time clock system used in the current market. It is also a significantly safer and secure option because instead of using a card or a chip to track the periods, personal and non-forgeable items like fingerprints, iris scans are used. In addition, this kind of time clocking system circumvents the problems of friends logging on for others and greatly reduces the fraudulent practices that can be implemented to cheat the system.

Importance of A Time Clock System:

Most businesses use it to manage and keep track of the time and attendance of their employees. Listed below are a few advantages of having a time clock system:

  1. Increased accuracy while tracking employee working hours

  2. Increased productivity as the time clock system reduces the time taken to run payrolls and increases the accuracy of the data.

  3. Increased employee satisfaction as their timing and attendance is not subject to human error.

Conclusion-

There are many different types of time clock systems currently being used in the job market. The use of these systems ensures efficient tracking of the attendance and timing of workers.
